Club Newsletter - May 26th Update

The weekend weather looks amazing for flying RC. I hope to see a good crowd this weekend. If you've been waiting for training, there will definitely be instructors available.

As usual, please skim the headers for the important bits!

1. David Word Memorial Fun Fly is coming up soon. The date is June 18th. We'll start after lunch, grill around dinner, and hopefully stay late enough for some night time flying. I need a couple key volunteers to pick up food and to cook. Let me know if you can help. If you can help propagate the flyer, let me know. You can grab a PNG off Slack.

2. Please DO NOT drive on the runway! - You may not realize this, but our runway is unusually thin (about a 1/2 inch in some places) and given it's current state, your vehicle is very likely to damage it. It's happened recently, in fact. If for whatever weird reason you actually need to drive to the other side of the runway, please, please drive around the active portion. We need the runway to last a little bit longer.

3. Name Tags - We took an informal poll on Slack, and it turns out many of you would like to have a club provided name tag. It would be nice to have as a sort of membership card as well. It's often hard to tell if a new person is a member or not. For my part, I see the value, but we've tried it before and no one ever put them on. Anyway, since some of you aren't on Slack, please send me any feedback you might have on the subject. Our thoughts at the moment were to issue an inexpensive convention style name tag with a yearly, printed membership card / name tag. Members could arrange for a nicer name tag at their expense through the club. If a club officer doesn't recognize you, he might ask to see it to make sure you are a member, but otherwise, they wouldn't be required. (We need to know that you have current AMA membership for liability issues, and would prefer you paid your dues.) However, this won't work unless the regulars start wearing them. Obviously, we know each other, but it does make it easier for new people and visitors.

4. EAA Summer Camp - Our local EAA 690's Aviation Summer Camp is also coming up. You will find the SMRCF and EAA 690 have a substantial crossover and as such, we help them out on the first day of the camp where the kids are introduced to aviation modeling and radio control. We need a few volunteers to help the kids and to bring some cool airplanes to show off. The date is Monday, June 13th. (Many companies have "Volunteer Days" where you can take off without burning a vacation day?) Please contact Joel Levine <jlevine@bellsouth.net> if you can help.

5. Board of Directors Open Meeting - Meeting notes are here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NoqPNZDyJZ3oScF5jqxe5VZnIjIXQVrdI9KSThH6NbE/edit?usp=sharing

I apologize for the short notice on the Zoom link, but I needed to get it done before our Fun Fly.

6. Event Season is here! - Marc has compiled a nice list of local events on Slack. Check it out and visit another club sometime this year!
