We've just returned from the Joe Nall event and the regional AMA meeting. I counted at least eight people from our club at the event. If you didn't get to attend, check out the coverage on RCGroups / Flying Giants (https://www.flyinggiants.com/joe-nall-triple-tree-415/), and make plans for next year!
Meanwhile, I have some updates for you. Please at least read the headers below.
1. Dekalb Police Drone Training May 26th - They will have exclusive use of the field, so please stay away on that day. It's probably a positive thing for us that the airfield has other compatible uses.
2. June 18th event at SMRCF - David Word Memorial - Our own Spring Fun Fly is coming up next month. If you have any desire to compete a little in the light events, bring an appropriate airplane. We may discuss which events to run on Slack.
3. Pecan Patch Warbird Weekend - The Pecan Patch (another Atlanta area club) will be holding their warbird event this coming weekend. Check their Facebook page for details.
4. Menlo Red, White and Blue Event - Big Sky RC is a little further outside Atlanta, but will be hosting a nice low key event in late June 24th - 27th. (http://www.bigskyrc.org/) A number of SMRCF pilots should be in attendance. Here's some SMRCF photos from last year: (https://stonemountainrcflyers.smugmug.com/2021/SMRCF-visits-Big-Sky-RC-2021-Red-White-and-Blue-Fun-Fly/)
5. AMA Meeting - Joe Nall being the premier event in the Southeast, the AMA took the opportunity to update us on happenings at the National level. The big topic was the Remote ID requirements that supposedly kicks in September of 2023. AMA club fields should be free of this requirement, and the AMA plans to submit waivers for all chartered club sites. In other words, so long as you're flying at SMRCF, you can ignore this new requirement. Otherwise, mass produced airplanes (Horizon Hobby BNF airplanes for example) will likely come equipped and finally, otherwise, you may have to install a small ($30-ish) device to be legal.
6. No news is good news - I know there are worries about recent visitors to the field who might be considering it for other uses. So far, no news, which I optimistically take as a positive sign. There are some significant reasons to avoid our flying site for nearly any commercial use, and hopefully, that convinced them to move on.
7. Slack - I know not everyone is on the Slack app, but it is the quickest way to learn the happenings at the club. If you need help setting it up, please contact a club officer or instructor.
Well, that's all I have for now. See you at the field.
